Washoe County Regional Animal Services provides support for deceased pets due to wildfire

As Washoe County continues to respond to the needs of animals and residents impacted by recent wildfires, Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) is providing information about options for deceased household pets and livestock as a result of the wildfire. 

As residents return home, we recognize that sadly, some animals may not have survived. WCRAS is waiving fees and assisting residents with small, deceased domestic pets. Residents may request that WCRAS pick up small, domestic pets and provide transportation to the shelter, or they may bring the animal directly to WCRAS during our business hours. Domestic pets received by WCRAS will be handled through the agency’s normal communal cremation process. 

Residents who prefer to arrange and pay for private cremation may request contact information for local pet cremation providers. WCRAS can also temporarily hold a deceased pet for pickup by a cremation provider selected by the owner. 

Washoe County recognizes that the loss of a pet can be especially difficult during an already challenging time. Residents are encouraged to reach out for assistance in determining the most appropriate option for their animals.
