Summary: Containment on the Hawk Fire has increased to 95%. Containment means that a wildfire is secured within a perimeter, not that it is out. Smoke may be visible as pockets of unburned vegetation on the interior of the footprint smolder. Even when a wildfire reaches full containment, heat can remain within the fire footprint. Fuels mitigation, fireline, and containment lines established by crews will help prevent the possible spread of interior pockets of heat under predicted weather conditions.

Crews continue mopping up and eliminating hot spots on the perimeter of the burned area. Minimal creeping and smoldering are expected to continue today. Crews on the west side of the fire are mopping up in areas with heavy fuel loads and stands of trees. On the east side, crews are focused on repair work in contingency lines and mopping up containment lines.

Weather remains an important concern today. The forecast is for a 50-70% chance of rain, high relative humidity and calm winds. While this weather could keep the fire activity low, rain in the area brings the possibility of flooding and mudslides in burned areas.

Crews will continue to closely monitor changing weather and fire behavior while working to secure the fire and protect nearby communities.

Evacuations and Closures: While most evacuation areas have been reopened, the forest closures will remain in effect until mop-up, restoration and safety actions have been completed. This means that recreation areas, trails and roads in the burned areas are still closed. Anyone caught in the closure areas is subject to fines and other legal repercussions.

Safety: Fire crews, utility workers and public safety personnel are working in many of the affected areas with heavy and sometimes dangerous equipment that often has limited visibility.  Members of the public in these areas are asked to slow down and be careful.
