An evacuation is in place for several areas in and near the Cold Springs area, due to the wind-driven Bug Fire, which is currently burning more than 3,000 acres. U.S. 395 is open, with only the Village Parkway offramp closed. The fire is currently moving toward Red Rock Road north of Cold Springs.
The Evelyn Mount Community Center (1301 Valley Road, Reno) and the Red Cross is on site to assist evacuees.
A small-animal trailer is available at the evacuation center, and large animals can be taken to the Reno-Sparks Livestock Event Center, Gate 2 (1360 N. Wells Ave., Reno).
If you have to evacuate, here is a list of items to remember:
- Medications and personal care items (insulin, oxygen, feminine hygiene products, contact lenses, hearing aid batteries) to last for several days
- Baby formula, bottles, diapers, wipes
- Important family documents such as birth certificates, passports, insurance policies, and deeds
- Snacks and water
- Phone chargers, laptops or other electronics and a way to charge them
- Flashlights
- Pet food
- A change of clothes and comfort items such as a pillow and blanket
