Additional COVID-19-related death reported, and 8 additional cases

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Center is reporting an additional COVID-19-related death in Washoe County: A male in his 70s with underlying health conditions.

This is the 37th COVID-19-related death in Washoe County.

In addition, there were just eight additional positive COVID-19 cases reported and 15 additional recoveries.

  • Total COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 1,022 (+8 from 5/5)
  • Deaths: 37 (+1)
  • Recoveries: 431 (+16)
  • Active cases: 554 (-9)
  • Currently hospitalized: 59 (+3)
  • Cases who have discharged from hospital: 74 (+1)

Hospital bed and ventilator information

In Washoe County as of May 5, 2020:

  • 60 percent of short-term, acute-care hospital beds are occupied (+4% since May 4)
  • 38 percent of the Intensive Care Unit beds are occupied (-5%)
  • 16 percent of ventilators are in use (-6%)

More than 100 local agencies have received PPE

The COVID-19 Incident Management Team (IMT) is working with over 100 local agencies to distribute personal protective equipment (PPE) that includes law enforcement, first responders, health care facilities and long term care facilities. The IMT gets PPE from the State of Nevada, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and through purchasing from private companies.

The PPE includes masks, gloves, face shields, gowns and more. More than 83,000 boxes of PPE have been distributed. Some of those entities are:

  • Incline Community Hospital
  • REMSA
  • Renown Health
  • City of Reno
  • City of Sparks
  • Saint Mary’s
  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue
  • University of Nevada, Reno
  • Washoe County
  • Washoe County Sheriff’s Office

We’re working to release information to the public on how much PPE we’re distributing to the community.

Residents urged to safely celebrate Mother’s Day

Washoe County residents are being asked to safely celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10, and limit large gatherings to prevent possible transmission of COVID-19.

We’re encouraging residents to find creative and unique ways to thank mothers on this special day and not put them at risk of exposure to COVID-19. Watch this video on what social distancing is and how it’s effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

The Regional Information Center and REMSA are reminding residents that calling 9-1-1 and going to the emergency room right now – even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic – is safe. If you’re experiencing symptoms such as a stroke, cardiac arrest, severe allergic reaction, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden loss of consciousness, severe abdominal pain, chest pain or difficulty breathing, do not wait to call 9-1-1 for emergencies.
