Residents with Janssen vaccine appointments will receive either Moderna or Pfizer vaccine

Change made based on CDC, FDA guidance

April 13, 2021. Reno/Sparks, NV – Residents who were scheduled to receive the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) COVID-19 vaccine will receive the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine until further notice. This change is in line with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommendation to pause the use of the Janssen vaccine out of an abundance of caution.

The agencies reported six cases nationwide of a rare and severe blood clot. About 6.8 million doses have been administered in the U.S. according to the CDC and FDA.

Those residents who have received the Janssen vaccine in Washoe County are encouraged to monitor their symptoms and be in contact with your doctor on your health status. According to the CDC & FDA, all six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred six to 13 days after vaccination. The Health District has administered about 2,878 doses of Janssen at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center and through our homebound program.

According to the CDC, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. There have been no associated issues with the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.

The Mobile Vaccine Unit clinic in Gerlach scheduled for Wednesday, April 14 will occur and the Pfizer vaccine will be used.
