38th COVID-19-related death reported

Reno/Sparks, NV – The Regional Information Center is reporting an additional COVID-19-related death in Washoe County: A male in his 70s with underlying health conditions.

This is the 38th COVID-19-related death in Washoe County.

In addition, there were just eight additional positive COVID-19 cases reported for the second day in a row and 25 additional recoveries.

  • Total COVID-19 cases in Washoe County: 1,030 (+8 from 5/6)
  • Deaths: 38 (+1)
  • Recoveries: 456 (+25)
  • Active cases: 536 (-18)
  • Currently hospitalized: 47 (-12)
  • Cases who have discharged from hospital: 86 (+12)

Hospital bed and ventilator information

In Washoe County as of May 6, 2020:

  • 62 percent of short-term, acute-care hospital beds are occupied (+2% since May 5)
  • 35 percent of the Intensive Care Unit beds are occupied (-3%)
  • 19 percent of ventilators are in use (+3%)

Total number of COVID-19 tests performed in Washoe County: 12,193

As of May 6, 2020, a total of 12,193 COVID-19 tests have been performed in Washoe County. The tests may include non-Washoe County residents who were tested in Washoe County. The numbers are provided by the State of Nevada and include testing done in Washoe County via the drive-thru site at the Livestock Events Center and at area hospitals.

Residents who have symptoms of COVID-19, including cough, shortness of breath and others are encouraged to get tested.  To complete a risk assessment and potentially get tested for COVID-19, call 775-328-2427, or fill out a risk assessment form online (Complete el formulario de evaluación COVID-19).

Housing available for self-isolation

On behalf of the COVID-19 Incident Management Team serving Washoe County, the Cities of Reno and Sparks, and the Washoe County Health District, we recognize that healthcare workers serving long-term care facilities are at a greater risk of exposure to COVID-19. 

If you are a healthcare working experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, or if you have been exposed to a patient who has tested positive for COVID-19, we strongly encourage you to undergo testing for the virus. Learn more.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19, and have no place to isolate to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and possibly affect your family and loved ones, there are options available to you at no cost.  Please call 775.328.2427 (24/7) to learn more on testing and housing. Housing is available to any Washoe County resident who is COVID-19 positive and needs a place to self-isolate.
